Green Hues Dominate 2022 Color of the Year

Getting Ready to Sell? Get Ready to Paint.

As the housing market begins to wake up from its winter slumber, sellers are readying their homes for listing. Painting is often a relatively easy and affordable way to give a home a cosmetic makeover and refresh for potential buyers. Whether you paint the whole exterior or just one room, fresh paint makes a big impression. So what color should you choose? Paint experts have made their selections for the 2022 color of the year.

Green Hues Dominate 2022 Color of the Year

    Gldden-guacamole
Starting off the green trend is Glidden with its 2022 color of the year: Guacamole. Glidden says this “spirited soothing green brings an organic energy to any space, which is needed because we all know you’ve probably killed at least three house plants this year.” Glidden is not only a company with an apparant sense of humor, but is also more affordable if you are working within a tight budget. The color Guacamole somehow feels like both a cozy and fresh shade of green.

Next we have the Benjamin Moore 2022 color of the year, October Mist 1495. This “gently shaded sage quietly anchors a space, while encouraging individual expression through color.” This is sure to be a neutral color on the green side for any homeowners hoping to quickly refresh a few rooms before listing their house for sale. This green particularly goes well in a kitchen with stainless steel appliances as gray and silver seem to be complimented by this light sage hue.

    PPG-Olive-Sprig
Similar to October Mist is Olive Sprig. PPG Paints’ Olive Sprig is “a relaxed but enticing green that emulates the feeling of soothing aloe vera or a fragrant plant. It brightens any space with organic liveliness. A versatile color that lives well inside or outside, Oliver Sprig blends in with nearly any environment.”

More Green Color of Year Picks

A stain, rather than paint, on the green hue bandwagon for 2022 color of the year is Gentle Olive from Minwax. They say the color is “rooted in nature with hints of sage green and subtle gray… bringing an optimistic, meditative mood to any room.” Minwax is the go to brand for wood stains. Gentle Olive is a great color for kitchen cabinets, a bar area, or if want to just freshen up a kitchen table and chairs set. The name Gentle Olive perfectly describes this stain, which you can make more transparent or darker depending on your staining technique.

    Evergreen-Fog
Next is one of my personal favorite color of the year picks for 2022: Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog. The company says “Evergreen Fog is versatile and calming hue, a chameleon of color of gorgeous green-meets-gray with just a bit of blue. It’s simple but sophisticated. A beautiful original color for spaces that crave a subtle yet stunning statement shade.” I agree completely with the green-gray description. This color could go in almost any large and well lit room and look fantastic.

    Breezeway
Last but not least and my second favorite is Breezeway, the 2022 color of the year selected by Behr. They describe it as “a relaxed and uplifting sea glass green expressing peace and tranquility for forward movement.” The color has a bit of a toned down mint chocolate chip ice cream feel to it. The hue feels pretty and bright and seems like a bolder choice.

Not Every Color of the Year for 2022 is Green

    Very-Peri
Not everyone picked a green hue for 2022 color of the year. Pantone stands out the most with their bright choice of Very Peri. I think this color resembles one of those crazed minions from the Despicable Me 2 (2013) movie. Pantone, on the other hand, describes it as, “encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time with its violet red undertone… displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.”

    Krylon-Satin
Krylon is another company that went a different way with its 2022 color of the year choice. Satin Rolling Surf is like a blueish/green 90’s teal, described by the company as a magnificent blue. Krylon is a leader in the spray paint world boasting its “Fusion All-In-One with 5x stronger adhesion sticks to almost anything.” If you’re looking to add a pop of color to a patio chair or side table, Satin Rolling Surf is a great choice.

    Dunn-and-Edwards-Art-and-Craft
Lastly bucking the green trend for 2022 color of the year, is Dunn-Edwards Paints. Dunn-Edwards “has been the leading the paint manufacturer in the Southwestern United States since 1925.” Their choice for 2022 color of the year is Art and Craft. They say the color is “an autumnal hue with warm earthy shades that evokes feeling of stability and calm.” This taupe and brown shade is definitely earthy and looks bomb with brass light fixtures.

Making the Right Paint Color Choice

Still not sure what color is right for you? Better Homes and Garden put together an excellent article summarizing the the 2022 color of the year paints that you can read here. Remember that just beacuse paint experts have selected the above colors as a 2022 color of the year does not mean any one of theses colors will meet your painting needs.

If you just moved into a home and plan to stay and enjoy it for year and years, pick a color you love. However, if you are painting for the specific purpose of getting your home ready to sell, a nuetral color is best. The article Best Nuetral Paint Colors says, “The nuetral color palette of greige, beige and gray is a great choice when you want to create an interior with a clean, modern feel. These paint colors work well with both traditional and contemporary homes.”
