Sixteen Teachers and Staff Recognized for STEM
Teachers and staff at the Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School were once again recognized for their STEM achievements. Earlier this week Ottawa Hills Local Schools shared that sixteen teachers and staff were honored with the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award. Each year the Ohio Academy of Science awards the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence to teachers that excel in STEM education. These teachers “stimulate student originated, inquiry based science education and technological design and extend STEM education beyond traditional classroom activities.” -The Ohio Academy of Science
“We are incredibly proud of our teachers and the opportunities they provide for our students to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Their dedication to STEM initiatives, effective pedagogy, and student development goes beyond the classroom and helps define the high standards we have as a district. The recent enhancements to our facilities, which include the Foundry, renovated science, art, and STEM classrooms, as well as the new honors scientific research lab, will hopefully create even more opportunities for our students!” –Ottawa Hills Local Schools
Why STEM Matters
STEM, short for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, are skills that the US Department of Education has deemed essential for our future workforce. “In an ever-changing, increasingly complex world, it is more important than ever that our nation’s youth are prepared to bring knowledge and skills to solve problems, make sense of information, and know how to gather and evaluate evidence to make decisions. If we want a nation where our future leaders, neighbors, and workers can understand and solve some of the complex challenges of today and tomorrow, and to meet the demands of the dynamic and evolving workforce, building students’ skills, content knowledge, and literacy in STEM fields is essential.” -US Dept. of Education
