    The Toledo Zoo Orchid Show

    Step out of the cold and into a world of exotic flowers at the Toledo Zoo Orchid Show. The annual Orchid Show at the Toledo Zoo kicked off last weekend, on February 11. Located inside the Museum of Natural History, the show runs consecutively Friday-Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm thru February 27. Admission to the Orchid Show is included in your zoo membership or with the purchase of zoo admission.

    What is the Toledo Zoo Orchid Show?

    The Toledo Zoo says, “Become immersed in beautiful blooms throughout the ProMedica Museum of Natural History during the Orchid Show at the Toledo Zoo! Discover the vibrant colors, delightful scents and interesting backstories of rare and exotic orchid species from around the world.”

    Tropical Plant Sale at the Toledo Zoo Orchid Show

    Cannot get enough of the beautiful orchids? You can purchase an orchid or select from several tropical plants via the Toledo Zoo online plant sale. Pre-order online now and pick up at the zoo on Thursday, March 3 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Plants available for purchase range from tropical ant plants to an assortment of orchids. Available orchid varieties include dendrobium, phalaenopsis, intergeneric, cattleya, yellow oncidium, vanilla, and vanda. Pictured right assorted phalaenopsis in Kokodama Moss Planter for $23.     Family Tropics Tour

    Looking for a more in depth experience than a self-guided tour? Together with the Orchid Show the Zoo also offers educational workshops. The first is the Family Tour & Mini Terrarium taking place the weekend of February 18-20, as well as the weekend of February 25-17. The Toledo Zoo says, “In this hour-long class, you will take a guided tour of our Tropics greenhouse in the ProMedica Museum of Natural History. Meet a live animal from the tropics, and build your own mini terrarium to brighten up your home.” Although viewing the Orchid Show and Tropics is part of your zoo entrance, this guided tour does require you to purchase tickets in advance. Therefore, tickets can be purchased for $30 for members and $35 for non-members. Tickets, dates, and times, and more information on the Zoo’s website.

    Rainforest Adventure Fun Day

    The Toledo Zoo also offers a children’s fun day in addition to the Orchid Show. The Zoo says, “spend the afternoon at the Zoo exploring the Tropics with all the many plants and animals that live here.” The four-hour long day starts at 11 am on February 26. Kids ages 5-12 “will enjoy a pizza lunch and some fun outdoor Zoo activities.     Toledo Zoo Orchid Show Photography Workshop

    Terrarium Ecosystem Workshop

    Lastly, the Toledo Zoo Orchid Show has limited spots available for a terrarium ecosystem workshop on February 26. This takes place during the Orchid Show from 11 am – 12 pm in the Relic Room of the ProMedica Mesuem of Natrual History. According to the Zoo you can build, “your own self-sustaining terrarium that can support rare tropical begonias with little to no upkeep! We will discuss the ecology behind a successful low maintenance terrarium and construct our own balanced ecosystem within an attractive 2-gallon glass terrarium. Pricing is inclusive of terrarium, rare begonia, and all other supplies. No horticultural experience necessary.
